Suspect Identified and Charged Following Live Oak Shooting

LIVE OAK, CA – Authorities have identified and charged a 42-year-old man in connection with a shooting that occurred on Portola Drive on Wednesday evening, September 16, 2026.

Sheriff’s deputies initially responded to reports of a shooting near the 2300 block of Portola Drive at approximately 6:00 p.m. Responding personnel located one victim at the scene, who was subsequently transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Officials confirmed the victim has since been released.

Deputies detained the suspect at the scene shortly after arriving. Officials identified the suspect as James Alexander, a resident of Clatskanie, Oregon, and noted that he was known to the victim. Alexander was booked into custody on charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and battery causing serious bodily injury.

Portola Drive was temporarily closed to traffic while law enforcement personnel processed the scene. Investigators state the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.
