Driver Arrested for DUI After Vehicle Crashes Into Freedom Boulevard Business
WATSONVILLE, CA – A multi-vehicle crash involving an impaired driver left a building damaged and sent two people to the hospital on Thursday afternoon.
Emergency personnel from the local police and fire departments responded to reports of a vehicle crashing into a building in the 1800 block of Freedom Boulevard shortly after 1:30 p.m. En route, responding officers were notified that one individual was pinned beneath the vehicle and a second person was injured.
Upon arrival, officers discovered significant structural damage to the business, with a Toyota 4Runner positioned inside the building. Emergency crews rendered aid to the injured, including the driver, identified as 73-year-old Edwin Wetterstrom, who remained inside the vehicle.
Wetterstrom and one other individual were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment, while a third person received medical attention at the scene. Authorities indicated that all involved individuals are expected to recover.
Preliminary investigative findings reveal that the 4Runner initially struck two parked vehicles across the street before traveling across Freedom Boulevard and crashing into the commercial building. The roadway was temporarily closed to traffic during the initial response and site clearance.
Following his medical evaluation, Wetterstrom was arrested and booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on charges of driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury. Authorities stated that the investigation remains ongoing.
