Fullerton Resident Arrested on Attempted Murder Charge Following Parking Lot Assault
FULLERTON, CA – The Fullerton Police Department arrested a local resident Sunday evening following an assault with a deadly weapon in a parking lot on the 3000 block of West Orangethorpe Avenue.
At approximately 10:39 a.m. on August 23, 2026, the Fullerton Police Department received a call regarding the incident from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. An Orange County Sheriff’s deputy had been flagged down by a community member regarding the assault and was present at the scene when Fullerton police officers arrived.
Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from injuries consistent with an assault involving an edged weapon. Sheriff’s deputies were rendering medical aid to the victim at the scene. Fullerton Fire Department personnel subsequently responded and transported the victim to a local trauma center, where he remains in critical but stable condition.
The suspect had fled the area prior to the arrival of law enforcement. Detectives from the Fullerton Police Department initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack. At approximately 7:33 p.m. the same day, detectives arrested 46-year-old Fullerton resident Rene Torres in connection with the incident. Authorities booked Torres on suspicion of attempted murder.

Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives determined that the incident was isolated and that the suspect and victim were known to each other.
