Deputy-Involved Shooting Follows Barricade Incident and Assault with a Firearm in Mentone

MENTONE, CA  —  On Friday, August 14, 2026, at approximately 10:50 a.m., deputies from the Yucaipa Sheriff’s Station responded to a report of an assault with a firearm on the 300 block of King Street in Mentone.

According to official reports, employees and private contractors from Southern California Edison (SCE), ACE Tree Enterprises, and Evergreen Traffic Control were performing tree-trimming operations within a utility easement on a residential property. A resident, identified as 78-year-old Paul Ronald Selby, armed himself with a firearm and discharged multiple rounds at the workers along the roadway.

Upon arrival of responding deputies, Selby retreated into the residence and barricaded himself inside. The Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division (SED) and crisis negotiators responded to assist ground units, deploying armored vehicles near the property. Over several hours, law enforcement personnel made repeated public announcements instructing Selby to exit the home.

During the standoff, deputies deployed chemical munitions into the structure to facilitate a surrender. Selby’s wife subsequently exited the house and was moved to safety by emergency personnel. While inside, Selby discharged his weapon at deputies, resulting in a deputy-involved shooting.

Selby was struck by gunfire. Medical personnel rendered lifesaving measures at the scene, where Selby was pronounced deceased. No deputies, SCE employees, or other members of the public sustained physical injuries during the incident.

The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division has assumed responsibility for the ongoing case. Law enforcement requests that anyone with information contact the Specialized Investigations Division at 909-890-4904 or submit details anonymously via We-Tip at 844-909-3006.
