Man shoots store clerk in early morning robbery

REDLANDS – Police are searching for a hardhat-wearing man who shot a store clerk during an early morning robbery on Saturday.

The male suspect hung around an AM/PM convenience store on West Redlands Boulevard at 5 a.m. Saturday, waiting for customers to leave before approaching a male clerk with a handgun and demanding money.

The suspect shot the clerk, took the money and fled from the store, say police.

“The clerk’s injuries are not life threatening,” said Redlands police spokesman Carl Baker on Monday.

Police, who have video surveillance images of the armed robbery suspect, describe the shooter as a black male in his early 20s with a mustache and goatee. At the time of the shooting, the robber was wearing a white hard hat, black hooded jacket and blue jeans.

The AM/PM store, which is on the border of Redlands and Loma Linda, is located in an area surrounded by apartment buildings, near a Wal-Mart shopping complex and less than a quarter-mile from Interstate 10.

Det. Andy Capps is heading the investigation of this case. Baker said there have been no updates on this case.

Redlands police released a surveillance image of the suspect in an AM/PM armed robbery Saturday.
