Sierra County Sheriff’s Office Investigates Illegal Drone Flight Near the Elephant Fire
SIERRA COUNTY, CA — July 12th 2026 — “This afternoon, the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a vigilant citizen regarding an illegal drone operating in the vicinity of the Elephant Fire, where firefighting aircraft were actively engaged in suppression efforts.

Thanks to the prompt reporting by the initial caller and information provided by numerous members of the public, deputies were able to quickly identify the individual believed to be responsible for operating the drone.
During the incident, some aerial firefighting operations were temporarily grounded until authorities were able to confirm that the drone no longer posed a threat to firefighting aircraft. Even a brief interruption of aerial operations can delay fire suppression efforts and place firefighters and the public at greater risk.
The preliminary investigation indicates the drone was not only operated in a manner that interfered with active firefighting aircraft, but was also flown at an altitude that exceeded legal operating limits and within airspace that had been closed under a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) established for wildfire suppression operations. These restrictions are in place to protect firefighting personnel and aircraft operating in hazardous conditions.
The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating this incident. Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be submitted to the Sierra County District Attorney’s Office for review and consideration of any applicable criminal charges. The Sheriff’s Office will also coordinate with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which has jurisdiction over violations of federal aviation regulations.
The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that flying a drone near an active wildfire is both dangerous and illegal. Unauthorized drone flights can force firefighting aircraft to stop flying until the airspace is confirmed clear, delaying firefighting operations and jeopardizing the safety of firefighters and the public.”
