Monterey Police Investigate Unprovoked Stabbing on North Fremont Street
MONTEREY, CA — On July 2, 2026, at approximately 9:32 p.m., Monterey Police Officers were dispatched to the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP) following a report that an individual had arrived at the emergency department with stab wounds. Due to the nature of the injuries, the victim was subsequently transferred to Natividad Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening wounds.
During interviews with law enforcement, the victim stated that earlier in the evening, he was walking along the 2300 block of North Fremont Street when he was confronted by an unknown male. The suspect allegedly assaulted the victim with a pocketknife without apparent provocation. The victim described the assailant as a Hispanic male wearing a red jacket. The victim indicated that he did not immediately realize he had been stabbed and walked away from the scene; upon later discovering his injuries, a family member drove him to the hospital.
Monterey Police Department officers and detectives launched an investigation into the assault. Personnel canvassed the North Fremont corridor in search of a definitive crime scene, interviewed witnesses, and gathered local video surveillance evidence. At this time, the identity of the suspect has not been established.
