RIO OSO, CA — On July 6, 2026, the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported landlord-tenant dispute involving a firearm at a property in the Rio Oso area.
During the initial investigation, deputies learned that the landlord, 62-year-old George (Randy) Purbaugh of Rio Oso, allegedly pointed a firearm at his tenants during the course of the dispute. Upon arriving at the scene, responding deputies attempted to establish contact with Purbaugh and issued multiple verbal announcements directing him to exit the residence. Purbaugh did not comply with the commands.
Because a firearm was reportedly involved, the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office activated its Special Enforcement Detail (SED), which deployed to the scene. Following the arrival of the specialized unit, deputies maintained communication with Purbaugh. He subsequently complied with law enforcement directives and surrendered to officers on scene. Purbaugh was taken into custody without further incident.
Following the arrest, detectives obtained and executed a search warrant at the property. During the search, investigators located and seized a 12-gauge shotgun, a .22-caliber rifle, and ammunition for both weapons.
Purbaugh was transported and booked into the Sutter County Jail on charges of resisting, delaying, or obstructing a peace officer; brandishing a firearm in a threatening manner; battery; assault with a firearm; and making criminal threats.
