SAN DIEGO, CA – A vehicle pursuit early Thursday morning resulted in a single-vehicle collision and the arrest of one individual in San Diego, according to law enforcement officials.
At approximately 12:37 a.m., a patrol officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a speeding vehicle near the intersection of 1st Street and Alameda Boulevard. The driver failed to yield, initiating a brief vehicle pursuit. The officer discontinued active pacing of the vehicle after the suspect accelerated to high speeds.
Shortly thereafter, the fleeing vehicle struck the center median and traffic signal poles at the intersection of 1st Street and Orange Avenue. The responding officer arrived at the crash site and witnessed the driver fleeing the area on foot. Following a brief foot pursuit, officers took the suspect into custody without further incident in the 1100 block of 2nd Street.
Law enforcement personnel established a security perimeter around the scene to conduct a secondary search. The San Diego Police Department’s Airborne Law Enforcement (ABLE) helicopter assisted in searching the surrounding area to determine if there were any other occupants in the vehicle. The search concluded with no additional individuals located.
The driver was arrested and booked into the local jail facility on multiple charges related to the pursuit and collision. Authorities have stated that an investigation is ongoing to determine whether driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol was a factor in the incident. Personnel from regional partner agencies provided assistance during the response.
