OXNARD, CA — June 21st 2026 — A “disturbance call” led to assault and the kidnapping of a 17-year-old girl.
On the night of January 15, Oxnard police of 0fficers were called to a disturbance outside
a Ventura Boulevard retail store that involved several individuals including Carlos Canon, 36, of Oxnard.
According to Oxnard Police Department spokesman Det. Diego Estrada, “Canon had
been with a group of friends at a nearby business” before the confrontation unfolded.
The investigation later determined that Canon and the teenage victim were “loosely
acquainted through mutual friends.”
During the disturbance, Canon allegedly “assaulted one victim with a belt and tried to
hit another person with his vehicle.” Witness statements, reviewed surveillance video,
and cellphone footage recorded by an independent witness showed Canon “grabbing a
17-year-old girl, forcing her into the SUV’s rear cargo compartment, closing the cargo
door and driving away.”
Canon then drove recklessly through Oxnard streets “while the teenager remained
confined in the cargo area, leaving her fearful for her safety.” A short time later, Canon
was involved in a collision, and fled the scene on foot. At that time, the female victim
made her escape from the vehicle.
The ensuing prolonged investigation conducted by the Oxnard Police Department’s
Violent Crimes Unit “developed probable cause to arrest Canon on suspicion of
kidnapping, child endangerment and assault-related offenses.”
On June 19, investigators discovered that Canon was already in custody at the Ventura
County Pre-Trial Detention Facility on unrelated charges. He was then additionally
arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, child endangerment and two counts of assault with
a deadly weapon. He remains in custody on a no-bail hold.
