Irvine Police Issue Warning After Distraction Theft Involving Large Cash Withdrawal

IRVINE, CA – The Irvine Police Department has issued a public advisory regarding distraction thefts following a recent incident involving the theft of a large cash sum.

According to reports, a victim withdrew $14,000 from a local financial institution. Upon arriving at his subsequent destination, the individual observed that one of his vehicle’s tires had deflated due to a hollow metal spike embedded in it. While the vehicle owner was at the scene, two men approached and offered assistance. Although the victim declined their offer, one of the individuals managed to remove the cash from the vehicle while the owner was distracted by attempts to inflate the tire.

In response to the incident, law enforcement officials are advising community members to exercise caution after making significant financial withdrawals. The department recommends traveling directly to one’s destination and remaining aware of anyone who may be monitoring or following from the bank.

Additionally, authorities urge drivers to remain vigilant during unusual scenarios designed to divert attention, such as sudden flat tires, unexpected notifications of vehicle damage from strangers, or unsolicited approaches by unfamiliar individuals. The department emphasizes the importance of keeping valuable items secure at all times and reporting any suspicious behavior directly to the police.
