San Francisco Police Department Arrests Suspect in Taraval District Homicide Investigation

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — The San Francisco Police Department has arrested a 68-year-old man in connection with a homicide that occurred in the Taraval District earlier in May.

On May 17, 2026, at approximately 5:21 a.m., police officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 2500 block of 46th Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds and began rendering immediate medical aid. Arriving paramedics performed life-saving measures; however, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The SFPD Homicide Detail subsequently assumed control of the investigation. Through their inquiry, detectives identified the suspect as Philippe Chagniot, a resident of San Francisco, and established probable cause for his arrest.

On May 27, 2026, SFPD investigators located Chagniot and took him into custody without incident. Following the arrest, members of the Homicide Detail executed a search warrant at Chagniot’s residence, where they seized evidence connected to the shooting. Chagniot was transported to the San Francisco County Jail and booked on a charge of murder under Penal Code section 187(a).
