SANTA MARIA, CA — June 8, 2026 –– A wanted felony suspect was arrested on the night of June 6 after an standoff during which he barricaded
himself inside a northeast Santa Maria home and refused to come out.
According to the Santa Maria Police Department Watch Commander, officers responded
at about 6:30 p.m. receiving information that Santa Maria resident Christian Chavez, 36,
“was wanted in connection with multiple felony offenses and was at an area residence.”
Upon arrival at the suspect residence, officers attempted contact with Chavez,
whereupon “he barricaded himself inside a residence and refused to comply with
officers’ commands.”
As the incident developed, police called in the department’s Special Weapons and
Tactics Team (SWAT). Officers also used crisis negotiators, tactical personnel, drones, K-9
officers and an armored rescue vehicle during the standoff.
“After several hours of negotiations and tactical operations, the suspect was safely taken
into custody without injury to officers, or the public.” Chavez was transported to Santa
Barbara County Northern Branch Jail where he was booked on the outstanding felony
charges. He remains in custody with bail set at $100,000.
