Butte County Jail Inmate Charged with Assault of Correctional Deputy

CHICO, CA — “On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, an inmate at the Butte County Jail assaulted correctional staff during a housing movement.

Andrew Blake, age 38 of Chico, was initially arrested on Monday, May 25, 2026, by the Chico Police Department for criminal threats, false imprisonment and for brandishing a weapon.

On Tuesday, at approximately 8:45 p.m., correctional deputies contacted Blake in an attempt to move him to a different housing unit within the jail. After initially indicating he would cooperate, Blake began to resist and was able to force his way out of the cell he was in.

Correctional deputies gave multiple verbal commands for Blake to stop resisting and return to the cell, but he refused. During the ensuing struggle, Blake bit a correctional deputy on the hand and later bit a sergeant on the hand, causing injury. Additional deputies responded and assisted in restraining him without further incident.

The injured sergeant was transported to Oroville Hospital for treatment.

Blake was charged with assault, resisting arrest, and assault on a custodial officer. The incident remains under investigation.”
