ANTIOCH, CA — A Contra Costa County Judge recently set bond at $11.6 million for felony suspect Jaquan T. Jones, 38, of Antioch. Jones is charged with murder, two attempted murders, kidnapping, and child abuse, and well as numerous enhancements for special circumstances.  Jones has remained behind bars at the Martinez Detention Facility since his arrest on May 5.

That same day at 9:14 a.m., Antioch police responded to Percheron Way to reported gunfire. Officers found an unconscious man suffering from gunshot injuries, and shortly afterwards he was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other residents of the home were transported to a hospital for treatment of multiple gunshot wounds.

A prepared statement from the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office alleges. “Jones fatally shot Cordai Mustafi, 44, and attempted to murder Dejon Anderson, 23, and Shontella Anderson 46.”

Jones fled from the scene of the shootings. Next, he reportedly forced his way into residence on
Dawnview Court, a quarter-mile away. Inside this home, he allegedly held a 65-year-old woman
hostage and 7-year-old boy.

Fortunately, neither the woman nor boy were injured. The woman managed to escape and flee to a
neighbor’s home, and phone police. However, the boy remained with Jones until shortly before he
surrendered to officers nearly two hours later.

Investigators described Jones and shooting victims at Percheron Way as acquaintances. Though the Dawnview Court hostage victims do not know Jones.

Jones has prior convictions in Contra Costa County on his record for firearm possession in 2024, and robbery in 2006. He has been arrested at least 10 times since 2020 for such offenses as battery, burglary, grand theft, and robbery.

An arraignment on the complaint for Jones is slated for May 22 at 8:00 a.m. in the Wakefield Taylor Courthouse, Martinez. The proceedings will move forward under case number 04-26-01734.
