Hiker’s Discovery of Human Remains in Morongo Basin Desert Area Leads to Homicide Investigation
MORONGO BASIN, CA — The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division – Homicide Detail has launched an investigation after the discovery of human remains in the Morongo Basin desert area on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
At approximately 7:30 a.m., deputies from the Morongo Station responded to a report from a hiker who found what appeared to be an adult human skull. Upon arrival, deputies confirmed the discovery and notified the Homicide Detail. Detectives, along with representatives from the Coroner’s Division and Crime Scene Specialists, conducted a search of the immediate vicinity and successfully recovered the remains.
Initial observations indicate the skull had been exposed to the elements for an extended period of time. Investigators performed an extensive search of the surrounding area as part of the ongoing investigation. The recovered remains are scheduled to undergo a forensic examination, and authorities are awaiting DNA results to assist in the identification process.
