Minor Arrested Following Vehicle Theft, Assault, and DUI Collision in San Luis Obispo
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA — The San Luis Obispo Police Department responded to a request for assistance from the California Highway Patrol near the intersection of Marsh and Higuera Streets just after 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2026. CHP officers had discovered a single vehicle with extensive damage, though the driver was not at the scene.
Physical evidence found along Higuera Street indicated the vehicle had been traveling northbound against the one-way flow of traffic. Investigators determined the car likely rolled over after striking a utility pole. An open bottle of vodka was observed on the vehicle’s dashboard.
Subsequent investigation led officers to the registered owner of the car, who reported that her ex-boyfriend had stolen the vehicle following a physical assault. A witness at a nearby Chevron station provided a description of a visibly intoxicated male who had entered the business. Shortly thereafter, dispatch received a report of a suspicious person matching that description inside Avila Senior Living on Marsh Street.
Officers detained a 17-year-old male at the senior living facility. The subject, who was found to be heavily intoxicated, admitted to driving and crashing the vehicle. While being evaluated by EMS in a parked ambulance, the male fled on foot but was quickly apprehended. Following a medical evaluation at a local hospital, during which he reportedly attempted to flee again and was abusive toward staff, he was cleared for booking.
The minor was transported to the Juvenile Services Center on multiple charges, including felony grand theft auto, felony corporal injury, felony vehicle theft, misdemeanor driving under the influence, misdemeanor hit and run, and misdemeanor resisting arrest.
