MONTEREY, CA – The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has initiated an investigation into an assault at the Monterey County Jail that resulted in the death of an incarcerated individual. The incident was discovered on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at approximately 10:00 a.m.
According to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office, correctional deputies were entering a housing unit to perform a routine safety check and distribute meals when they located an unconscious individual. Initial observations indicated that the person had been assaulted. Deputies and jail medical staff began life-saving measures immediately upon discovery. Paramedics and fire personnel arrived at the facility shortly thereafter to continue medical assistance; however, the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The identity of the deceased is currently being withheld while authorities work to notify the next of kin. Detectives are in the process of investigating the circumstances surrounding the assault and are working to identify the persons responsible.
To assist with the investigation, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has requested the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Unit to perform a post-mortem forensic examination. This examination will be used to determine the official cause and manner of death. Officials stated that no further information is available for release at this time.
