Suspect Arrested Following Multi-City Vehicle Theft and Burglary Investigation in San Marcos Area
SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department has announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with a series of vehicle thefts and burglaries across North County. Melchor Mercado, 42, was taken into custody on March 19 in Escondido following an investigation by the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station.
The investigation began on January 30, 2026, when deputies responded to a report of a stolen motorcycle. The owner had tracked the vehicle to a residential property in San Marcos. According to authorities, the motorcycle had been stolen the previous evening from the victim’s residence in Escondido. During the initial search of the San Marcos location, deputies recovered the victim’s motorcycle along with a second stolen motorcycle.
Detectives subsequently identified Mercado as the suspect associated with the recovered property. Over the following weeks, investigators linked Mercado to several additional incidents, including the theft of a motorcycle in Vista, a vehicle theft and commercial burglary in San Marcos, and a residential burglary in Valley Center that occurred in January 2026.
Following his arrest on Thursday, detectives conducted a search of Mercado’s residence in accordance with his court-ordered probation terms. Officials stated that evidence found during the search linked Mercado to the crimes under investigation.
Mercado was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on charges of auto theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, and commercial burglary. He remains in custody with bail set at over $100,000.
Records reveal that Melchor has an extensive rap sheet spanning over a decade. Since 2015, he has been arrested more than 10 times on charges ranging from arson and burglary to domestic violence and felony warrants.
