Man Arrested After Attempting to Disarm Monterey Police Officer in Munras Avenue Incident

MONTEREY, CA — Officers with the Monterey Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious individual at a business in the 500 block of Munras Avenue on March 13, 2026, at approximately 7:40 P.M. Callers indicated the subject was making customers uncomfortable. Upon arrival, officers identified the individual as Jerome Johnson, 40, of Monterey. Johnson was observed standing in front of the establishment with his hand inside the front of his pants while watching customers, including families with children.

When an officer attempted to engage Johnson, he reportedly kept his hand concealed and moved rapidly toward the officer. Despite instructions to stop, Johnson continued his approach, leading the officer to physically push him back. The officer initiated de-escalation protocols known as Integrating Communications Assessment and Tactics (ICAT). The officer disengaged, drew a Taser, and maintained communication with Johnson while waiting for backup.

Following the arrival of a second officer, the two attempted to take Johnson into custody. A physical struggle ensued, resulting in all three individuals falling to the ground. During the encounter, Johnson allegedly wrapped his arms around an officer’s head and upper body. Police reports state that Johnson also gripped the handle of an officer’s holstered firearm but did not successfully remove it. Officers subsequently deployed a Taser to end the resistance and complete the arrest.

Johnson was evaluated by medical personnel at the scene and treated for minor injuries at a local hospital. One officer also sustained minor injuries but returned to duty the same day. Johnson was later booked into the Monterey County Jail following a five-hour clearance process. He faces charges of attempting to disarm a peace officer, resisting a peace officer with violence, and battery on a peace officer. Bail has been set at $20,000.
