Stolen Vehicle Recovered Following Integration of ALPR and UAS Technology

WEST SACRAMENTO, CA – “Over the weekend after being notified by a partner agency that a stolen vehicle had entered our city; officers located and tracked the car using license plate reader data and city traffic cameras. Patrol units located the vehicle, and a Department Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) was launched to provide real-time overhead support.

From the air, officers observed two individuals inside the trunk area of the vehicle. As patrol units approached, the UAS captured clear video of a suspect searching through the trunk and discarding the car keys into nearby bushes upon seeing emergency lights. Officers safely detained the suspect and another individual who arrived shortly after.

The vehicle was recovered and returned to its owner.

This incident highlights how Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) and drone technology are key parts of a strong public safety technology ecosystem, working together to enhance officer awareness, improve decision-making in real time, and strengthen overall public safety in our community.”
