ANTIOCH, CA — Matthew J. Britt Jr., 31, of Richmond, was arrested for allegedly assaulting a
woman at her residence in Antioch.
Britt remains in custody at the Martinez Detention Center
in lieu of $360,000 bond, pending a court hearing on January 21.
Antioch officers responded on the morning of January 6 to a disturbance on East Sixth Street.
When officers arrived, Britt reportedly barricaded himself behind a closed door. He has a
history of violence and he was suspected of carrying a knife.
“Officers contacted a 25-year-old woman and determined she was a the victim of a felony
assault,” Antioch police said in a news release. “The woman was transported to a local
hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.”
SWAT and crisis negotiation teams were dispatched to deal with Britt. A six-hour standoff
ensued until Britt surrendered himself, and he was placed under arrest at 3 p.m.
Britt was booked on suspicion of the following charges –
Assault with a deadly weapon PC 245(A)
Corporal injury PC 273.5 (A)
Resisting/Obstructing an officer PC 148 (A)
Incidentally, Britt is a registered sex offender. He was also booked for failure to register his
current address PC 290.013 (A).
Britt has prior arrests on his record for assault with a firearm and other firearms-related
offenses. He was also previously arrested for possession of a controlled substance,
participation in a criminal street gang, and receiving stolen property.
