CONCORD, CA — Kirk L. Richardson, 61, was arrested for allegedly murdering his elderly parents inside their Walnut Avenue home on New Year’s Eve morning. Richardson remains in custody in lieu of $4 million bond.

One of the victims, Joyce N. Richardson, 85, phoned Concord police at approximately 7 a.m., and reported a family disturbance. She and her 90-year-old husband William L. Richardson were found dead when responding officers arrived at the scene.

Officers reportedly heard the fatal gunshots being fired. “The two individuals were deceased from apparent gunshot wounds,” Concord police said in a news release. “A third individual at the residence was detained and subsequently arrested in connection with the incident.”

Richardson was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility. He was booked December 31 at 7:55 a.m. on suspicion of murdering both his parents.

On January 2 charges were filed against Richardson. He is charged with two counts of murder PC 187(A). He is also charged with two counts of personal and intentional discharge of a firearm to cause great bodily injury PC 12022.53.

The suspect reportedly has a history of violence. His mother previously reported him to police for prior domestic violence incidents. In addition, Richardson also evidently engaged in prior threatening incidents involving neighbors who obtained restraining orders.

The investigation of the double-homicide is ongoing, and there are no outstanding suspects. Anyone with information related to this incident can contact the Concord PD major crimes unit, detective Dylan Luciano at 925-603-5831.
