Teenager Arrested on Evading Charge After E-Motorcycle Pursuit and Crash in Santa Cruz
SANTA CRUZ, CA – A teenager was taken into custody following a brief pursuit involving a California Highway Patrol (CHP) Santa Cruz Officer and an electric motorcycle earlier this week. The incident began on Soquel Drive near 41st Avenue when the officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the rider for a traffic violation.
The rider reportedly failed to yield, initiating a pursuit. The chase concluded shortly thereafter when the rider crashed the electric motorcycle. The teenager sustained minor injuries and was provided with medical care at the scene before being placed into custody.
The rider was identified as a 16-year-old male. Following the arrest, the teenager was charged with misdemeanor evading. He was subsequently released to the custody of his parents. The electric motorcycle was impounded by authorities.
CHP officials used the incident to reiterate the necessary requirements for operating such vehicles on public roadways. Electric motorcycles must be registered with the DMV, and riders are required to possess a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement, insurance, and a DOT-compliant helmet. The department also issued a reminder regarding the inherent risks associated with reckless operation of electric bikes and motorcycles, noting the danger posed to riders, drivers, and pedestrians. Parents were advised to research the regulations thoroughly before acquiring an electric bike, scooter, or motorcycle for their children.
