BERKELEY, CA — A ship mechanic was arrested October 20 in connection with a Berkeley
gunfight earlier this month.
Ramon Lupian, 46, of Oakland, was arrested at Alameda County
Santa Rita Jail, where he was already in custody for a related arrest on October 6 by Oakland
police.
The gunfight involving two vehicles occurred October 4 at 5:30 p.m., near the intersection of
Ashby Avenue and Seventh Street.
Berkeley surveillance camera video and witness statements implicated Lupian as one of the suspects involved.
The investigation is ongoing.
Lupian allegedly shot at another vehicle traveling on Ashby Avenue.
That vehicle fled and crashed nearby on Hollis Street in Emeryville. Four persons from that vehicle fled on foot, but
they were detained by Emeryville police when they returned to it.
Oakland police stopped Lupian’s vehicle on October 6 near the intersection of Harold Street
and Coolidge Avenue in Oakland. Lupian who was driving was placed under arrest there, and
three firearms were recovered.
A 31-year-old unidentified woman who was a passenger moved into the driver’s seat and
drove away. She was apprehended a short time later, near at 41st Avenue and East 16th Street
in Oakland.
Evidently, the vehicle Lupian allegedly shot at was stolen during a robbery in Oakland, which
Lupian witnessed. According to a prepared statement from Berkeley police, Lupian pursued that
vehicle to Berkeley, where the gunfight happened.
Multiple charges were filed against Lupian on October 21
His charges include shooting at an occupied vehicle, and carrying a loaded concealed weapon. He is also charged with being a felon
in possession of a firearm, and a prohibited person in possession of ammunition. His charges also
include firearms-related enhancements.
