Traffic Stop for Stop Sign Violation Leads to Seizure of Illegal Fully Automatic Firearm
WOODLAND, CA — A routine traffic enforcement operation on the morning of October 21st led to the arrest of an Oakland man and the seizure of an illegally modified firearm, according to a statement released by the Woodland Police Department.
A patrol officer was monitoring traffic at the intersection of California Street and West Beamer Street following community reports of stop sign violations. During this enforcement period, a vehicle driven by 24-year-old Shaun Faulkner-Washington, of Oakland, reportedly failed to stop at the intersection.
Upon making contact with Faulkner-Washington, the officer observed ammunition and marijuana not stored in a closed container within the vehicle. Further investigation led to a search of Faulkner-Washington’s person, where officers located a concealed handgun. The weapon was found to be lacking a serial number, equipped with a high-capacity magazine, and modified with an attachment to convert it to fully automatic operation.
A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded methamphetamine, multiple ski masks, and additional ammunition. Authorities also determined that Faulkner-Washington has prior convictions for violent felonies. Faulkner-Washington was arrested and subsequently booked into the Yolo County Jail on charges related to the possession of the modified firearm and for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Police stated that the enforcement action addressed community concerns regarding traffic safety and resulted in the removal of the weapon from circulation.
