Riverside, CA – On Monday, September 29, 2025, Riverside Police officers responded to an automotive business on the 2900 block of Orange Street following reports of a shooting. A woman had contacted authorities stating that her boyfriend had been shot. Upon arrival, officers located 27-year-old Riverside resident Horacio Montero Jr. inside a trailer with gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital after receiving emergency care from firefighter-paramedics but later died from his injuries.
The Riverside Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Unit, along with forensic specialists, assumed responsibility for the investigation. They were supported by the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office and the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.
Investigators identified 40-year-old Kenny Andrew Johnson of Riverside as a suspect. Surveillance operations were carried out with assistance from the Problem Oriented Policing Team, METRO Team, and Air Support Unit. Johnson was arrested in Riverside within hours of the incident. Detectives later determined the shooting was part of a murder-for-hire scheme involving a second individual, 43-year-old Alonzo Jeffery Monk Jr. of Colton. On October 2, with support from the METRO Team, Monk Jr. was located and arrested in Colton.
Authorities believe Johnson conspired with Monk Jr. to arrange the killing of Montero. The motive remains under investigation. Both suspects have been booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder, and they are being held without bail.
The Riverside Police Department has asked anyone with additional information to contact detectives or submit tips anonymously through the department’s mobile application. The investigation remains ongoing.
