Newark Stabbing: Suspect In Custody

– by Jim Emerson

NEWARK, CA — Luis R. McLaughlin Jr., 18, of Newark, was arrested for allegedly stabbing
another man multiple times.

McLaughlin remains in custody at Alameda County Santa Rita
Jail ineligible for release on bond, pending a pretrial hearing on September 15.

An assault with a deadly weapon occurred August 19 in Newark on the 5600 block of
Thornton Avenue. Newark police responded to the crime scene at approximately 11:36 p.m.

“Officers located an adult victim who sustained multiple stab wounds,” Newark police said in a
prepared statement. “He was suffering from life-threatening injuries. The victim was
transported to a local trauma center.”

Fortunately, he survived despite great bodily injuries.

Newark detectives determined that the suspect and victim did not even know each other. “The
incident was motivated by a desire for notoriety,” according to Newark police.

Diligent investigative work implicated McLaughlin in the brutal stabbing attack.

A Newark police SWAT team served warrants on the 5000 block Civic Terrace Avenue on August 24.
McLaughlin was placed under arrest at 6:27 a.m., without further incident.

Eighteen felony-level charges and special allegations were filed on August 26 against
McLaughlin. His charges include the following –

· Willful deliberate premeditated attempted murder
· Assault with a deadly weapon
· Personally inflicting great bodily injury on a person
· Mayhem

The investigation remains active. Anyone with information can contact Detective Sgt. Matt
Warren at 510-578-4960 or email matt.warren@newarkca.gov.
