Homeless Man Arrested: Suspected for Murdering Another Homeless Man in Hayward
– by Jim Emerson
HAYWARD, CA — A dispute between two men living at a homeless encampment in Hayward
ended with a murder.
The victim was fatally shot and he died at a hospital. The suspect
Rosario R. Rodriguez-Cazares, 49, remains in custody ineligible for release on bond.
Rodriguez-Cazares is being housed at Alameda County Santa Rita Jail, pending a plea
hearing on September 18.
Hayward police arrested him September 2 at 2:37 p.m., following what Hayward PD described as an exhaustive investigation.
On August 22, officers responded to a report of an incident near the 3000 block of San
Antonio Street. Police found the victim shortly after 8 p.m., 43-year-old Berber Zavala,
suffering from a gunshot wound.
Police reportedly interviewed a witness at the crime scene.
Paramedics also responded. Zavala was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later
died.
The suspect evidently followed the victim who was running towards the homeless
encampment. Apparently, the victim slipped and fell. That’s when Rodriguez-Cazares
allegedly used to rifle to shoot Zavala as he tried standing up.
Multiple charges were filed against Rodriguez-Cazares on September 4. His alleged crimes
include murder, and firearms-related charges.
However, the investigation of what happened is still ongoing. Anyone with information can call
Hayward police Detective Nate Scinto at 510-293-7176.
