RICHMOND — Mandingo A. Hayes, a 54-year-old resident of Richmond, was arrested for allegedly
assaulting and injuring a bus driver.
Hayes is being housed behind bars at the Martinez Detention Facility.
The assault occurred onboard a bus at the beginning of rush hour on August 25 at approximately 7:35
a.m. An Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) bus driver was attacked outside the
Richmond BART Station at 1700 Niven Avenue.
Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the attack, and Hayes was placed under
arrest at 8:11 a.m. Hayes remains in custody in lieu of $630,000 bond, pending a scheduled court
hearing on September 10.
Investigators characterized the assault of the bus driver as a domestic violence incident. The bus
driver victim sustained lacerations, and was treated and released from a nearby hospital.
Hayes stands accused of inflicting corporal injury on his spouse/cohabitant.
He also allegedly obstructed/resisted an officer. He was transported and booked into the county lockup for the following
charges –
· Attempted murder
· Assault with any means of force likely to produce great bodily injury
· Felon in possession of tear gas
· Disobeying a domestic relations court order
Hayes has a violent history that include prior arrests for assaults, and a conviction on his record for
battery. In November 2023, Hayes was arrested for being a felon in possession of tear gas.
