Elderly Men Arrested for Possession of Child Pornography

NOVATO, CA  — Two elderly men were recently arrested for possession of child pornography and other
offenses.

Remsen M. Benedict, 70, and Brian C. Moylan, 68, both residents of Novato, were
booked into Marin County Jail. Benedict and Moylan are previously convicted sex offenders.

Novato police conducted a compliance check of registered sex offenders with San Rafael
police and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives from Novato went to Benedict’s and
Moylan’s residences on July 23.

An identification check revealed Benedict, a bus driver, had an outstanding federal warrant in
violation of his probation status.

Investigators found electronically stored images of child pornography on a “thumb drive” in his bedroom.

Benedict was placed under arrest at 5:05 p.m. He was booked for the outstanding warrant, and
possession or control of child pornography.

He remains in custody on federal detainer and $25,000 bond on open charges for possession of obscene matter of minor under age 14.

Moylan who is a business owner was arrested later the same day at 7:05 p.m. A search of
Moylan’s laptop computer led to the discovery of child pornography.

Moylan was booked for possession of obscene matter of a minor under age 14, and Marin County probation violation.
He also remains in custody.

Persons convicted of certain sexual offense are required to register with local law
enforcement and subject to police searches.

Periodic compliance checks are conducted to ensure that convicted sex offenders adhere to sex offender registration requirements.
