Officer Involved Shooting on Occidental Drive in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, CA – An officer-involved shooting occurred early Monday morning in the 3100 block of Occidental Drive, following a report of a disturbance involving a weapon.

At approximately 1:30 a.m. on July 14, 2025, Sacramento Police Department patrol officers were dispatched after receiving a call from an individual, who was also identified as the suspect. The caller reported being armed with a sword and intending to harm a friend.

Upon arrival at approximately 1:45 a.m., responding officers located the suspect outside his residence, armed with a sword. For a period of approximately 30 minutes, officers, including Crisis Negotiators, engaged in de-escalation and negotiation attempts, instructing the suspect to relinquish the weapon. The suspect reportedly declined to comply with these commands and advanced toward the officers.

During this interaction, one officer discharged their firearm, striking the suspect at least one time. Less-lethal munitions were also deployed during the incident. Officers immediately provided emergency medical aid to the suspect at the scene.

The Sacramento Fire Department transported the suspect to an area hospital for treatment. The suspect is reported to be in stable condition and will be booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail once medically cleared.

Officers recovered the sword at the scene. No officers sustained injuries during the incident.

The Sacramento Police Department’s Homicide Unit, Internal Affairs Division, and Professional Standards Unit are conducting an investigation into this incident. Additionally, the Force Investigation Team will conduct a separate inquiry focusing on policy, tactics, and training related to the use of force. Oversight of the investigation is being provided by the Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.

This incident falls under the City Council’s policy on Police Use of Force and Senate Bill 1421. Consequently, all relevant video and audio recordings associated with this incident are scheduled for public release within 30 days.
