OAKLAND, CA — A suspect with a criminal history was arrested for allegedly assaulting two men
at a supermarket in Oakland Chinatown.
Jeremy Morton, 30, of Hayward, remains ineligible for release on bond from jail, pending arraignment on May 2.
Both victims were assaulted August 10 at Won Kee Supermarket, 216 Seventh Street.
The violence erupted when they asked to search the suspect’s bag, before allowing him to enter
the supermarket. These elderly victims were attacked at approximately 9:45 a.m.
“The suspect became agitated and began punching and kicking the first victim,” Oakland
police said in a prepared statement. “As the second victim attempted to intervene, the suspect
struck him with a shopping cart.”
On April 24, an Oakland foot patrol officer received information from a community
ambassador who recognized the suspect. Additional officers responded and Morton was
found nearby and arrested without further incident.
Multiple charges were filed against Morton the following day on April 25. His charges include
assault with a deadly weapon, and assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury.
Morton is also charged with elder abuse. He has prior convictions on his record for grand
theft, second-degree robbery, and other offenses. Morton has been arrested 14 times since
2014.
The investigation of the supermarket assault is still ongoing. Anyone with information can
