Investigation Underway Following Officer-Involved Shooting in San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CA — The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating an officer-involved shooting. The incident reportedly occurred on April 14, 2025, in the 800 block of 26th Street in the city of San Diego.
According to official reports, at approximately 3:20 p.m., San Diego Police Dispatch received a report from a witness who described a suspect with a partially concealed rifle in the vicinity of Sanger Place and Blanche Street. The suspect, identified as a Hispanic male adult in his thirties or forties, then placed the rifle into a white Ford F-150 truck and subsequently retrieved a handgun. An altercation then took place between the suspect and an unidentified individual on a bicycle. Following this, the bicyclist departed the area, and the suspect discharged one round from the handgun into the ground, in the direction the bicyclist had traveled.
Due to the nature of the incident, officers from the SWAT Primary Response Team, along with K-9 units and less-lethal resources, were dispatched to the location.
San Diego Police officers arrived at the scene and made contact with a male matching the suspect’s description. The male entered a white F-150 truck, and a pursuit ensued. The vehicle pursuit continued for slightly over 30 minutes, proceeding northbound on Interstate 5, transitioning to Interstate 15, and continuing onto surface streets.
The pursuit concluded in a cul-de-sac on the 800 block of 26th Street. The suspect attempted to flee, and his vehicle was involved in a collision with a San Diego Police Department K-9 patrol vehicle, resulting in minor injuries to the officer operating that vehicle. The suspect then drove forward, colliding with a pergola situated on the front yard of a nearby residence, at which point the Ford F-150 came to a stop.
Subsequently, two San Diego Police officers discharged their firearms at the suspect, and the suspect was struck. Officers removed the suspect from the vehicle and began administering life-saving measures. Paramedics arrived and provided further medical assistance; however, the suspect died at the scene.
One San Diego Police officer sustained minor injuries due to the deployment of the patrol unit’s airbag and was transported to a local hospital. Authorities indicate the officer is expected to make a full recovery.
Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives recovered both a rifle and a handgun from inside the Ford F-150.
In accordance with the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit is handling the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The investigation remains active, and detectives are currently involved in evidence collection, witness interviews, and the examination of all circumstances related to the shooting.
