Inmate Arrested at Sacramento County Main Jail for Murder

SACRAMENTO, CA  — A fight at the Sacramento County Main Jail led to the death of an inmate.

“Wednesday evening at approximately 7 p.m. a male inmate,  housed on 4-West at the jail pressed the emergency button in his cell and alerted deputies that he had been in a fight with his cellmate. Deputies responded to the cell, detained the inmate who called and discovered his cellmate lying on the floor.

Deputies then pulled the downed inmate out of the cell and began CPR. Fire personnel arrived a short time later and unfortunately pronounced the inmate deceased. Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators arrived on scene and began their investigation.

Officials identified as 32-year-old Sergey Gutsu as the suspect in the death of his cellmate.

Gutsu was booked (arrested) earlier Thursday morning, March 13, in relation to this homicide.

Gutsu has been in custody at the Main Jail on a PC 2620 (Order to Produce) since June 25, 2024. He was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for a murder committed in Los Angeles County in 2015, in addition to being sentenced to 51 years to life for a robbery and attempted murder in Sonoma County in 2016.

He is scheduled to appear in court on March 17.”
