Knife-wielding Man in Custody following hours-long Standoff

RANCHO CORDOVA, CA — “At approximately 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, officers from the Rancho Cordova Police Department and Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a residence on the 10000 block of White Rock Road in Rancho Cordova for what they thought was a domestic violence incident.
Upon further investigation, they learned that 52-year-old Rey Martinez was in a verbal argument with his wife when a mutual friend tried to intervene and mediate the dispute.
Martinez proceeded to chase that individual out of the home with a knife and made several threats toward him.
Martinez’s wife and child managed to escape the home before Martinez returned.
Deputies then went to contact Martinez at his residence, but he refused to exit, beginning an hours-long standoff.
The Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail (SWAT Team) and Critical Incident Negotiations Team (CINT) arrived on the scene to assist as Deputies attempted to convince Martinez to surrender peacefully. Martinez continually refused throughout the night, even at one point telling deputies to kill him. Just before 1:30 a.m. members of the Special Enforcement Detail and a K9 unit took Martinez into custody at the residence.
Martinez was transported to the hospital for treatment from the K9 apprehension, after which he will be booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail. He has been charged with violation of parole, threats to commit a crime resulting in death and assault with a deadly weapon.”
