Man Arrested for Allegedly Trying to Steal Self-Driving Car in L.A.

Los Angeles police recently arrested an individual for allegedly trying to steal a self-driving car.

According to a press release by the Los Angeles Police Department, 33-year-old Vincent Maurice Jones was arrested for allegedly trying to steal an autonomous driving vehicle belonging to the company Waymo.

Around 10:30 PM on March 2, the vehicle was dropping off a passenger on Main Street, just north of 1st Street, when Jones allegedly entered the vehicle and attempted to put it in drive, but “could not manipulate the controls.”

A Waymo representative reportedly used the vehicle’s intercom to warn Jones to get out of the vehicle. When Jones did not, the representative notified police.

A police unit responded and took Jones into custody on suspicion of attempted grand theft auto.
