“Oroville, CA- On August 22, 2023, an individual contacted the Butte County Sheriff’s Office and reported a shooting had occurred in the 6300 block of Custer Lane, Oroville. Deputies and detectives immediately responded. When deputies arrived on scene they determined one person had been shot. Despite the lifesaving measures performed, one person was pronounced deceased at the scene. The identity of the deceased individual is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.
Deputies and detectives immediately began conducting an investigation. During the investigation, detectives determined four individuals drove to a residence on Custer Lane. While at the residence the individuals attempted to take a generator. While attempting to take the generator, an altercation between Darren Moran, age 54, of Oroville and the decedent occurred. At some point during the encounter, Moran shot the decedent.
After the shooting, two individuals fled to an address located near the intersection of Wyandotte Avenue and Lower Wyandotte Road. Detectives responded to the address and located two individuals who fled after the shooting occurred. The individuals were interviewed and arrested for unrelated misdemeanor arrest warrants. Detectives arrested Moran for an open count of murder.
