A Humboldt County man has been arrested following an extensive investigation into the alleged possession of large quantities of narcotics for sale.

Heriberto Posos Cantu

According to a press release by the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Drug Task Force division, agents, as well officers from the Fortuna Police Department, conducted a search operation on June 20, 2023. Search warrants were served at multiple locations, including a residence on Francesco Place in Fortuna, a storage unit on Airport Road in Fortuna, and for an individual identified as Heriberto Posos Cantu, aged 37.

The HCDTF had developed suspicion through their investigation that Posos Cantu was in possession of a significant quantity of methamphetamine with the intent to sell, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Upon arriving at the storage unit on Airport Road, Fortuna Police Officer Stevens and his K9 partner Cain performed an open-air sniff inside the unit. Cain reportedly indicated the presence of narcotics or firearms at several locations within the storage unit. Agents then conducted a search and discovered approximately five pounds of methamphetamine, along with packaging materials and indicia allegedly linked to Posos Cantu.

Following the search of the storage unit, law enforcement proceeded to Posos Cantu’s residence on Francesco Place. As the agents approached the residence, they reportedly observed a vehicle backing out of the driveway and pulled the vehicle over. The three occupants in the vehicle were detained for questioning.

Officer Stevens and K9 Cain performed an open-air sniff around the vehicle, which resulted in Cain alerting to the potential presence of narcotics or firearms. Upon searching the vehicle, agents reportedly uncovered approximately seven pounds of methamphetamine.

Authorities also discovered that Posos Cantu had been informed about the impending search warrant and had contacted a family member, allegedly requesting them to remove the methamphetamine from the residence prior to law enforcement’s arrival.

During the search of Posos Cantu’s residence, agents discovered additional packaging materials, a digital scale, and approximately $10,000 in US currency. Posos Cantu arrived at the scene while the investigation was underway and was subsequently arrested without incident.

Posos Cantu was taken into custody and transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility. He has been booked on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance with the intent to sell. Authorities encourage anyone with information related to this investigation or other narcotics-related crimes to contact the Humboldt County Drug Task Force at 707-267-9976.
