Suspicious Death Investigation in Homeless Camp

Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Sacramento Police Department responded to the report of a deceased 60-year-old female at a homeless camp near Watt Avenue and Longview Drive on Monday, March 20, 2023, at approximately noon. The location of the encampment is near a jurisdictional border between the city of Sacramento and the unincorporated area of Sacramento County.

Sacramento Police Officers arrived on the scene first and discovered the deceased female inside a tent. Sheriff’s Deputies and the Sacramento City Fire Department arrived shortly after, and Fire Department personnel officially pronounced her deceased. Deputies took over the investigation and requested the coroner to respond when they determined the scene was within the jurisdiction of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

Upon conducting a cursory examination of the body, personnel from the Coroner’s Office deemed the death suspicious and potentially not of natural or otherwise known causes. Sheriff’s Deputies then requested detectives from the Homicide Bureau to respond.

Homicide detectives and Crime Scene Investigators arrived at the scene, interviewed witnesses, and gathered evidence. No further information or suspect information is available at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.
