A man was found dead on the driveway of a residence in Rio Linda on Sunday, February 26, 2023, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said in a recent press release.

Deputies responded to the scene after California Highway Patrol officers reported hearing gunshots in the area. The victim was identified as 42-year-old Russell Mawyer.

According to the authorities, deputies found Mawyer lying on the driveway of the residence and began life-saving measures, but Mawyer was ultimately declared deceased at the scene.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators were called to the scene to interview witnesses. Two individuals from the residence were detained and questioned but released, as they were not deemed to have been involved in the incident, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Detectives soon identified the primary suspect as the victim’s brother, 39-year-old Robert Mawyer.

Robert Mawyer was arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail. His first court appearance is slated for March 8 at 8:30 A.M.

Authorities say the motive behind the murder is still unclear, and the investigation is ongoing.
