“San Mateo, CA – On Friday, January 13, 2023 at approximately 11:05 p.m., San Mateo Police conducted a traffic stop on a Ford for a vehicle violation in the area of East Hillsdale Boulevard and Saratoga Drive. Officers determined that the driver was on post- release community supervision (PRCS) and subject to a search. Two passengers in the vehicle were juveniles. One of the juvenile passengers was on probation and subject to a search; the other juvenile was not subject to a probation search.

San Mateo Police officers conducted probation searches of the driver and the juvenile on probation. No contraband was located during these searches. Officers conducted a pat search of the juvenile who was not probation. During that search, officers located a loaded Glock .45 in the juvenile’s waistband. Additionally, officers located a second firearm, a loaded unserialized .9mm, in the pocket of the juvenile’s jacket.

Officers continued the investigation and located additional high capacity magazines and a drum magazine in possession of the juvenile who possessed the firearms. Officers seized the firearms and magazines as evidence.

SMPD officers safely arrested the juvenile and transported him to Hillcrest Juvenile Hall. He was booked on the following charges: possession of a semi-automatic pistol without a fixed magazine and a threaded barrel, possession of an unserialized gun, and loaded firearm on person in a vehicle and not the registered owner.

Remember, “If you see something, say something.” We’re encouraging our community to utilize security cameras. They are especially helpful identifying suspicious activity in neighborhoods when cameras are street facing. Our officers regularly canvass for surveillance and you can help by notifying SMPD where cameras are located in your neighborhood at http://www.cityofsanmateo.org/Nest.

This remains an open and active investigation.
