“On July 15, 2022, at approximately 1:34 pm, the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) received a call of a suspicious vehicle in the area of the 900 block of South Barrett Road, Yuba City.

Sutter County Sheriff Deputy responded and contacted a male subject who was later identified as 35-year-old Yuba City resident Christopher Matthew Tyler Kelsey.

The SCSO deputy was familiar with Kelsey and had prior knowledge that Kelsey had a felony warrant. The SCSO attempted to detain Kelsey when Kelsey became combative.

Kelsey was able to get away from the SCSO deputy and retrieved a can of bear spray out of the suspicious vehicle. Kelsey sprayed the SCSO deputy and then fled in the suspicious vehicle, which was described as a Green 1996 Ford Mustang.

With the assistance of Yuba City Police Department, SCSO Detectives, SCSO Administration, and other SCSO personal, Kelsey was taken into custody at approximately 2200 hours.

The SCSO Deputy that was sprayed with the bear spray was transported to the hospital for non-life threating injuries and was released. Sheriff Barnes wants to thank Yuba City Police Department and all SCSO personal for the work they put into apprehending Kelsey.

Kelsey was booked in the Sutter County Jail for numerous charges, including assault on a peace officer. Kelsey has a court date on July 19th at 3pm and is currently being held on the felony warrant and $150,000 on the fresh charges.”
