A Los Banos man suspected of attempted murder has turned himself in, according to police.

Officers had responded to the 300 block of Kumquat Avenue late on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 22, where a 38-year-old man had been struck by a vehicle and sustained significant injuries to the head and body. He was airlifted in critical condition to a hospital in Modesto, but ultimately died of his injuries, police said.

Witnesses at the scene told police that the victim had been involved in an altercation with 21-year-old Zachary Phillip Patina, and that Patina eventually got into his car and deliberately struck the victim before fleeing the scene.

Investigators found the vehicle — a gold Buick sedan — abandoned nearby, with damage and other evidence consistent with witness reports, police said.

Although police obtained an arrest warrant for Patina, he ultimately turned himself in on Thursday, June 30. He was booked at the Los Banos PD jail on suspicion of attempted murder.
