“On 4/8/22 at about 1230 hours, Officer Sanders was notified by Del Norte High School administration that an unknown person driving a truck, with a known student in the passenger seat, brandished what appeared to be an assault weapon, but was potentially a “splat-gun” in the back lot of the high school.

Administration showed Officer Sanders surveillance footage of the truck. Shortly after, Officer Sanders located the truck with the known student and initiated a traffic stop in the main parking lot of the high school.

The driver, Ethan James (age 21), initially told Officer Sanders that there were no weapons in the vehicle. However, during a search of the truck Officer Sanders located a concealed .22 caliber rifle, .22 rim fire ammunition, a BB gun, and a “splat-ball” gun.

James was arrested for 626.9 PC, possession of a firearm on school grounds, 25400 (A)(1) PC, possession of a concealed firearm, and 626.10 PC, possession of a weapon, non-firearm, on school grounds.

The student is also subject to administrative discipline at this time. The investigation is still ongoing. James was booked at the Del Norte County Jail.”
