The primary suspect in the murder of a 14-year-old Merced boy has been arrested after fleeing to Mexico and then illegally re-entering the U.S., according to police.

22-year-old Carlos Maldonado-Pizzaro was identified as the primary suspect in a drive-by shooting on March 8, 2021, in which 14-year-old Christian Alonso-Andrade was fatally struck by gunfire, police said.

By the time a warrant was issued for his arrest, however, Maldonado-Pizzaro had fled to Mexico.

On February 3, 2022, Border Patrol agents detained Maldondo-Pizzaro for allegedly re-entering the U.S. illegally. He was transported to and booked at the Merced County Jail on suspicion of murder, gang enhancements, and discharging a firearm at an inhabited dwelling.
