BERKELEY — A young man in custody allegedly shot up a residence with a semi-automatic firearm last month. The home was occupied when this shooting occurred, but fortunately no one was reported injured.

The apartment located on the 1900 block of Fairview Street was struck by bullets February 2. The front door and interior of an apartment unit were damaged.

Police responded to the reported gunfire shortly after 11 a.m. A neighboring law enforcement agency assisted in the ensuing investigation. The suspect was tracked by an automated license plate reader.

Manolo L. McKinley, 19 of Richmond, was identified as the suspect, with help from witnesses and surveillance video. The shooting and the vehicle used by the suspect were both recorded in real time.

This latest barrage of gunfire in South Berkeley might be related to an illicit drug transaction. Berkeley detectives searched McKinley’s residence and they found ammunition and evidence of drug dealing.

In addition to a large quantity of cannabis, detectives recovered psilocybin mushrooms, and anundisclosed amount of cash, among other evidence.

A warrant was issued for McKinley’s arrest. He was arrested at 2500 Arlington Boulevard in El Cerrito at noon on February 18.
McKinley was booked into Santa Rita Jail. He remains in custody in lieu of $100,000 bond. His plea hearing at the East County Hall of Justice is scheduled for March 9.

Among other charges, McKinley is accused of shooting at an inhabited dwelling and use of a firearm.
