A 55-year-old man has been arrested for murder after his long-term girlfriend was found severely beaten and dead in a living room in Garden Grove.

The suspect, identified as Manuel Martin Veerman of Garden Grove, fled the scene before police arrived but was found shortly after his description was broadcasted out to officers.

The incident took place around 2:47 p.m. at a residence in the 13600 block of Glenhaven Drive.  Officers responded to the home regarding a report of a female in distress.  On the way there, “they were updated with information that someone inside the home may be dead,” according to the news release.

When they reached the residence, they found the woman “in the living room with major trauma to her face and head area.”  She was pronounced deceased at the scene; her identity has not been released.

Veerman was located by a patrol officer about a mile away from the residence and taken into police custody.

“Detectives learned that witnesses heard Veerman and the victim arguing inside the residence, before he left,” according to the release.  “Once he was gone, one of the witnesses entered the home, found the victim unresponsive and called the police.”

Veerman has been charged with murder and is being held at Orange County Jail.
