An officer involved shooting resulted in the death of a man armed with a gun at Huntington City Beach last Saturday afternoon.

Huntington Beach police received calls about a “suspicious man with a gun” at the beach at about 3:15 p.m. on September 25th, as the U.S. Open of Surfing was winding down for the day.  Officers located and made contact with the man, later identified as 43-year-old Ronnia Garcia, just south of the pier.  Despite their numerous commands, Garcia refused to comply with police.  Finally, at least one officer opened fire.

Garcia was provided with “various lifesaving measures” before being taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Police recovered a gun at the scene of the incident.

“As is procedure with HBPD officer involved shootings, the HBPD has asked the Orange County Sheriff’s Department to lead the investigation,” states the release.

The City of Huntington Beach is offering emotional support services to witnesses or anyone in the vicinity of the shooting.
