DUI driver hits cars, sheers power pole in half

“On Sunday, September 5, 2021 at approximately 11:23 PM, San Luis Obispo Police and Fire responded to the 300 block of Foothill for the report of an injury traffic collision. According to witnesses, the driver, later identified as Kevin MatulMuralles, was driving at a high rate of speed westbound on Foothill towards Tassajara.

MatulMuralles passed a car stopped for the red light at Tassajara and clipped the front end of another car. MatulMuralles then drifted across all lanes and collided with a PG&E power pole, sheering it in half. He hit several more parked cars before coming to rest in the front yard of a residence.

MatulMuralles attempted to flee the scene but was prevented by nearby residents. MatulMuralles was arrested for DUI and for a warrant for violating his DUI probation. The passenger in MatulMuralles’ vehicle was transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, no other injuries were reported.

Several power and communication lines were damaged in this accident. Power was lost to several neighborhoods, including parts of downtown SLO. PG&E responded and is working to restore power.

The collision is still under investigation.”
